Maggie Davidson

Goldsmith and Gemologist

In my craft I search for the dynamic balance between the crystalline purity of stone and the molten fluidity of metal, captured in highly individual jewelry rooted in the rich traditions of the metal arts.

While some of my pieces are drawn from the perfection of nature, most unfold from the passions and joy of my own vision. Pairing tradition and innovation, I strive to create jewelry of timeless beauty that engages the spirit of the wearer, cultivates curiosity and gives pleasure.

I have been a practicing studio artist for over 17 years. I completed goldsmithing training at Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco and received Graduate Gemologist and Design Diplomas from Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California.

Maggie Davidson Statement

My jewelry is a dynamic balance between the crystalline purity of gemstones and the cosmic origins of metal.  We know with certainty, that all precious metals were deposited by meteorites that bombarded earth 200 million years after it was formed.  These precious materials are the foundation of my work as a jeweler.  Although I primarily use techniques rooted in ancient metalsmithing traditions, they are designed with a contemporary audience in mind.

My work draws from two distinct yet overlapping sources: patterns and forms that are found in nature, and the mathematical principles and the sacred geometry of medieval art and architecture.  For example, much of the engraving arts are based on the golden ratio, and the study of sacred geometry leads us to contemplate creation.  In designing a piece, I may deconstruct the enormity of a cathedral and reduce it to a fragment that becomes an intimate detail of history that you can hold in your hand.

These things inform my design process: referencing historical moments, medieval textiles, fragments of Gothic architecture, references from nature and my love of travel are my paths of discovery of the many wonders of our unique human history.
